Tata Docomo 3G Launch: What You Need to Know

The wait, as it's said, is finally over. Today at a press conference in Bangalore, Tata Docomo revealed that they would be commencing 3G services on the 5th of November, making Tata Docomo the first private operator to launch broad 3G services in the country. It was further revealed at the press conference that Tata Docomo would be launching 3G services in all the circles allocated to them after the 3G auction conducted by the Department of Telecommunications.

Here are the most important things you should know about Tata Docomo's 3G launch and the services they are going to launch with:

> Important dates to remember: Okay, so first up on the midnight of 4th of November all current Tata Docomo subscribers' (post-paid and pre-paid) connections will be upgraded to 3G automatically. Subsequently, all new subscribers to Tata Docomo (and current subscribers) will get to use free 3G services till the 11th of November.

> Charges, Rates etc: The Tata Docomo executives were unwilling to reveal pricing details and instead reiterated the fact that the 3G services were free till the 11th of November. Guess we will have to wait till the 11th to get more clarity on this.

> Extra Services: Along with 3G connectivity, Tata Docomo will also provide some extra services that make use of the 3G network. These include Mobile TV, that lets you stream live broadcasts from a selection of TV channels (they showed a pretty good stream of CNBC and NDTV at the press conference) and Live TV that will stream live videos of events for instance religious processions.

> Data Speeds: The Tata Docomo executives revealed that the ideal speeds on their 3G network would be about 20Mbps. But they also mentioned that the ideal conditions would be affected by geographical conditions, the handset being used and other factors. They put realistic figures at the 7-8Mbps range, which also seems a little bit optimistic to me. Let's wait and watch.

Watch this space for further updates on Tata Docomo's 3G services launch.

Windows Phone 7 Device For Every Microsoft Employee

Windows Phone 7 Microsoft employees will get Windows Phone 7 -- each and every one of them. That's 90,000 Windows Phone 7 devices! Great way to ensure Windows Phone 7 devices get more holding hands than Microsoft's social networking phone disaster, Kin . Microsoft has a tradition of introducing employees to new software and technology (through a process called "dogfooding"), and it isn't the first company to do so. According to Engadget , Apple reportedly gave each one of their employees an iPhone back in 2007; Google did a similar thing with the Nexus One phone. Some analysts are taking a dig at Microsoft's decision to distribute Windows Phone 7 devices within employees, referring to Steve Ballmer's alleged stomping on an employee-owned iPhone at a Microsoft event. Microsoft's way to stop employees from using smartphones from competing brands is to equip them with a home-brewn Windows Phone 7 device -- not a bad strategy, don't think any Microsof...
